5 Answers to the Most Common Central Vacuum Questions

Many of our clients are surprised when they discover that we offer central vacuum installations. We admit they might not be as flashy as our high-performance audio or home theaters. That doesn’t mean they won’t make as much of a difference in your everyday life. In the link below you can learn some of the benefits of these systems from reducing allergens to being more pet-friendly. Since we know this technology is not as well-known as some of our other solutions, we address some common questions so you can decide if it’s the right fit for your Wayzata, MN home.

How is a Central Vacuum Installed?

We can install central vacuums in both existing homes and new construction. In both cases, our primary role is placing the necessary PVC tubing and low-voltage wiring. The central power unit goes in a basement or garage; then we run the PVC tubing and wiring to all the inlets. These are the locations in your house where you can access the vacuum hose.

Though we recommend installing your central vacuum during construction, you won’t have to tear down any drywall to install it in an existing home. Usually, the pipes and wiring can be inserted through your inlet hole, so no additional holes are needed.

How Often Do You Have to Replace the Filter?

With a central vacuum, all dirt and debris are directed through your PVC pipes to your main unit located in your garage or basement. These vacuums have much larger filters than portable ones; they can hold gallons worth of debris and only have to be switched out a few times a year. To replace the filter, all you have to do is lift the lid, take out the filter, and put in a new one.

Where Should I Locate My Wall Inlets?

On average, we recommend having an inlet for every 700-1000 feet. During your consultation, we walk around to gauge your needs and space. Pay close attention to areas where you’ll use your vacuum most often and make sure they have a convenient inlet available.

Will a Central Vacuum Work on Floors?

There are a variety of tools that you can use for hardwood or tile floors. For example, we work with BEAM Central Vacuum Systems which offer automatic dustpans. Simply sweep any debris in the room towards the nearest inlet and then absorb all the trash through the automatic dustpan.

What Vacuuming Tools Are Available?

Most central vacuums come with the same tools included with high-end portable ones. Various sized standard attachments fit every nook and cranny. As we mentioned in a previous blog, these systems are ideal for pets since they’re a lot quieter. With that in mind, BEAM even offers pet grooming accessories. For kitchen usage, the DrawerVac is also an excellent way to get rid of crumbs or food items.
