What Is the Best Display Option for Video Conferencing?
Displays are the focal point of your conference room, drawing attention to essential video calls, presentations, or training material. Naturally, it’s the first piece of equipment many companies bring up during our AV installations. And it’s one of the places where it’s really easy to go wrong. Below, we highlight one of the most significant decisions you’ll have to make in your Minneapolis, MN office: Should you go with a flat screen display or with a projector?

SHOULD YOU GO WITH A TV OR PROJECTOR?
The primary difference between the two options has to do with your display size. How do you know the ideal size? You should take the depth of your room and divide it by two to find out how big diagonally your screen should be.
For larger conference rooms, with screens over 60”, projectors let you scale up at a lower price point. Larger screens are particularly crucial if you plan on doing a lot of presentations with numbers or text which become harder to read on smaller displays. An added benefit of projector screens is that you can pull them up and hide them when not in use to add a multi-purpose design to your space.
If the size is not an issue, then flatscreen displays offer a few benefits of their own. They have brighter images ideal for boardrooms with a lot of ambient lighting, have a longer shelf-life than many projectors, and often let you incorporate touch-screen technology. At the same time, 4K resolution and its higher pixel density is still a lot more common on flat panels than projected images, so you’ll have an easier time seeing the content at similar sizes.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PROJECTOR
If a projector is the right choice, here are some tips to follow when picking one out for your AV installation. The number one thing to consider is its brightness, measured in lumens. For most conference room installations, you want projectors between 3,000-5000 lumens. The larger and brighter the space, the higher you want your lumen count to be.
You’ll also want to look at your image resolution. Since most laptops use 1024 vs. 768 pixels, we recommend having at last HD resolution on your projector to share your content correctly. That being said, 4K projectors are becoming more affordable and will leave your company future ready as technology advances in that direction.
Should you go with a short-throw or long-throw projector? The latter is the most common application, with the projector permanently installed in the back of the room. In smaller rooms or ones with really high ceilings, a short-throw projector sitting closer to the screen may be more practical. Short-throw projectors are also ideal if you plan on moving the projector between different rooms.
As part of your AV installation, it’s essential to be able to connect your projector with whatever collaboration software you plan on using. In this case, you need to find models compatible with the control protocols used by the rest of your boardroom automation system, have a lot of inputs to connect sources, or at least offer wireless capabilities.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST FLATSCREEN
For your flatscreens, you’ll be looking for the same thing as your projectors. You want bright, high-resolution displays that connect easily with the rest of your boardroom. There are, however, a few additional flat screen features to consider.
Since you’re stuck with smaller sizes than projectors, sometimes dual display applications make more sense. You can stack two displays horizontally so everyone in the room sees well. It also allows you to view a live video call while sharing a presentation simultaneously.
You can also use split-screen displays. It’s for split-screen capabilities that high resolution is most important. As each split screen gets smaller, you need more pixels to get a clear image. In fact, split screen business applications are likely to be the first to embrace 8k resolution fully.
Finally, one of the coolest benefits of a flat screen display is the ability to take advantage of touch technology. Many commercial display companies offer interactive whiteboards for boardroom applications. Drag content around, annotate directly on the screen, and save as you go. This type of display lets you create a better collaborative atmosphere in your office.
