Motorized Shades – The New Health Benefit

Are we making a bold claim about motorized shades? Perhaps, but we think we can back it up. Consider some known facts from medical science:

  • Exposure to sunlight increases absorption of Vitamin D, a critical nutrient
  • Natural light helps ward off seasonal depression – especially from long gray winters (unfortunately they are a Minnesota reality)
  • Interestingly, natural light helps with sleep, and we know that sleep is critical to good health

You might be wondering at this point: what does this have to do with installing motorized shades in my Woodbury home? Read on as we connect the dots!

HARNESS THE LIGHT

A beautiful sunny day can lighten your mood, and we know there are proven health benefits. The benefit of motorized shades is one of convenience. If it’s just as easy to open a window shade as it is to flip on a light switch, then it is far more likely to happen. With motorized shades, one button can open all the shades, one of them, or some of them. They can open all the way, part of the way, or to any point you choose. Better yet, with smart home automation, it can all happen on a schedule, synchronized with sunrises and sunsets, and with some automation systems, tied to the weather forecast.

The health benefits are subtle but very real. When you wake up in the morning, open shades on a sunny winter day will get you going almost as much as coffee. When you want to sleep a few more winks, pressing a button – or even saying, “Alexa, lower the blackout shades” – can let you sleep in on the weekend just a bit more. Sitting in a favorite chair to catch up on your favorite magazines is more comfortable when reading with natural light coming through the window, reducing eye strain.

HARNESS THE SUN – AND CONTROL IT

Don’t underestimate the benefits of better temperature control as well. A little sun in the winter helps ease the bite of a cold day.  Automated shades can open all the way on a sunny and cold day – a sensor can even trigger the action. By the same token, too much sun generates heat in the summer. Control it and make the temperature more comfortable anywhere the sun streams in.

The convenience of motorized shading means you don’t have to keep the whole house bereft of natural light because of heat. You can have your automated shades open and close synchronized with the movement of the sun throughout the day as it affects your house.

If you have high clerestory windows, sometimes the sun’s position causes glare right in your line of sight. With motorized shading, a touch of a button can cure that problem, blocking the offending rays as needed.

LESS WORRYING

Motorized shades can help with home security as well. When you leave for a vacation, do you leave a totally dark house? Not likely, and especially not if you employ any type of smart security system. Motorized shades can be integrated with smart security, opening and closing window treatments in a pattern that mimics your activity when you’re home. Put it all together with a home automation system, and you have less worrying – about whether the sun is fading your expensive oriental rug, that you forgot to leave lights on or off, or that anyone is peering through your windows. Less worrying is less stress, and less stress is healthy!
